17 Days Markha Valley Trek

Duration : 17 days.
Trek Grade : Physically challenging and more suited to regular hill-walkers.
Highlights : Festival, Buddhist Monastery, Monks, High Passes, People and culture.
Highest Point : Kongmarula -la (pass) 17,700fts/5400mts.

In the far-flung northern reaches of India, Ladakh is one of the most remote and sparsely populated regions on earth. Bordered by Tibet, it is often described as the ‘roof of the world’ and has almost moon like terrain, girdled by some of the greatest mountain ranges of the world. Arid and barren but interspersed with isolated settlement, green oases of swaying poplars and cultivated farmlands, it is awe inspiring in its starkness and strangely beautiful. Ladakh is land of medieval gompas (monasteries) clinging to Cliffside, fluttering prayer flags, gentle people, high altitude deserts, rushing rivers, high peaks and passes but few roads.

After a sensational flight across the Great Himalaya and an exciting landing at Ladakh’s Capital City, Leh, you spend two days acclimatizing and sightseeing in the Indus valley. Each departure is planned to visit Spectacular Festivals of Hemis and Phyang. The trek starts at the village of Stok from where you climb through the gorges and remote Ladakhi villages of the northern Zanskar Mountains. You may well spot a legendary Snow Leopard, who romes the upper valleys of Nimaling and Markha. Having crossed the high passes, our trek ends at Hemis monastery, from where our jeeps will take us back to Leh.
